Poorva karma is done before main/pradhan Karma procedures. It is an important preoperatine procedure. It protects body tissues/Dhatus, organs. Poorva Karma includes snehan and swedan.
Poorva Karma Includes Snehan Karma – Oleation
Poorva Karma is the starting point of Panchakarma treatment. It helps to prepare the body for Panchakarma Treatment.
Application of medicated oils, ghritas on whole body or a painful area in a systematic manner is called as snehan.
Oleation involves application of oil or oily substance on the body. Ayurveda offers a variety of oils prepared from various herbal and mineral ingredients mainly for external use. Apart from oils and ghee used particularly for internal application. The fatty substance acts as an effective medium, manages to reach the deeper tissues, helps in carrying the medicinal ingredients to every cell of the body and loosen up toxins stuck in the cells.
Benefits Of Snehan
1) Application of oil over skin, pacifies vaat dosha.
2) Application of oil improves blood circulation.
3) It separates toxins from body tissues and brings them in circulation for elimination.
Poorva Karma Includes Swedan Karma – Fomentation
The Panchakarma therapies that generate sweat are called fomentation therapies. Oleation therapies are generally followed by fomentation therapies. The tissues made soft by oleation therapies become more flexible by subsequent fomentation. Deep-rooted toxins loosened by oleation, liquefy due to fomentation and are hence flushed out of the body.
Different types of fomentations are possible. These include steambath, sitting or sleeping in a specially prepared wooden sweat box, valuka pottali etc. Variations like Swedan for whole body (below the neck), for the diseased part of the body (local steam), according to the need of the patient can be done.
